This pretty, family-run country pub and restaurant has earned a thoroughly deserved excellent reputation simply through word-of-mouth. The Rythre oozes the unmistakably warm and friendly atmosphere of a well-kept, well-loved traditional English pub. Of the varied range of starters, a highlight must surely be the generous portion of delicious, tender pan-fried chicken livers with garlic butter and bacon. The steaks, for which the Rythre has become so famous, dominate the menu and vary from the 12oz fillet to the frankly terrifying Rythre Monster, a whopping 78oz, grilled to your liking. Such a piece of meat is surely not for the faint of heart, and tempted as I was to attempt such a feat, I instead opted for the comparatively tame extra mature rib-eye steak. Served with roast and boiled new potatoes, mushrooms, carrots and asparagus, the steak itself was fantastically tender and tasty, quite easily the best that this unashamed carnivore has ever eaten.

Greedily following this enormous main course with an equally sizable serving of tiramisu, which won a close battle with the terrific-looking banoffee pie, I was in danger of needing somebody to roll me out of the front door.

Upon leaving the Rythre Arms, I could not help but glance around the village for any ‘for sale’ signs, but there were none to be seen. If I had a local pub like this, I wouldn’t be budging either.
