Antony Worrall Thompson’s passion for fresh, seasonal ingredients and simple, honest food is truly indulged in his Berkshire restaurant. The Windsor Grill is completely devoid of pretension with the focus firmly on the food. Decked out in wood and leather, the design is comfortable and uncomplicated, while subtle accents such as fur cushions and logs in the fireplace lend a rustic feel – echoing the menu itself.

Considering Antony’s celebrity status, you would be forgiven for assuming that the Windsor Grill’s wares would carry a hefty price tag – you couldn’t be more wrong. Prices are extremely reasonable with starters from just £5.50 and main courses doing little to injure your wallet from £11.50. The emphasis here is on quality of ingredients and the result is a simple menu of robust, full-flavoured dishes. Start with chilli salt squid or the classic cold-water prawn cocktail. House starters like the crispy soft shell crab provide variety minus unnecessary fuss or frills. A glance at the main courses reveals that this is classic grill fare served with a touch of class. The 10oz burgers are made from 35-day-hung sirloin, rump and rib steak from the finest suppliers and the taste is simply unrivalled. The steak section of the menu provides further choice. All steaks are prime Aberdeen Angus Scottish beef, which is aged for 35 days and then served with chunky hand-cut chips and Béarnaise sauce or a choice of savoury butters. If beef is not your thing, the Ark Farm chicken with roasted garlic and herb dressing may well float your boat instead. House specialities include a classic mixed grill, chicken Kiev and Antony’s own roast Middle White porchetta with apple chilli jelly – worth a trip to Windsor alone.

When it comes to serving quality produce, the Windsor Grill is second to none, proving that untamperedwith ingredients result in more flavourful dishes. This addition to Windsor’s dining scene really is proving that less is certainly more.
