An appetising aroma of freshly prepared food greets diners at this friendly, family-run restaurant. Overlooking open countryside, Bretts is housed in a barn-style building with a charming country-cottage feel throughout.
As well as breakfast, lunch and evening menus, the cream teas with home-baked scones and Sunday lunches are very popular. My friend and I chose starters from the specials board and an unusual combination of melt-in-the-mouth scallops on a black pudding base with Hollandaise sauce – which proved a delightful fusion of textures and flavours. The chilli kick in my spicy prawns set the tastebuds tingling for the next course of sea bass, which was moist and tender and came served on herby mash. A delicious dessert of white chocolate cheesecake with raspberry coulis and cream followed. Local farms are the chefs' first port of call for meat and vegetables, while fish is delivered direct from Grimsby. Putting his own twist on traditional English fare, chef John and his wife Stacey won an award for 'Best Newcomer' soon after opening Bretts around five years ago.
In the sunnier months, enjoy your meal outside in the pretty alfresco dining area and soak up the calm, unhurried atmosphere promoted by the personable staff. Music evenings are held once a month and the venue can be hired for weddings and other occasions.
