Latimers' reputation for local, fresh, seasonal seafood is second to none. The experience and knowledge of the Latimers team and their fishermen means they are able to provide a wide variety of the best local fish and shellfish available.
With the seashore just metres away from the shop door, it seems only right that Latimers should take advantage of all the North Sea has to offer - that is, gurnard, Dover sole and squid, wild sea bass, wild salmon, wild sea trout, crab, lobster and langoustine to name but a few. Robert Latimer is on the phone morning noon and night to fishermen all along the coastline, making sure that the best of the catch is hauled into Latimers the next day; all the local fish he buys is landed from day boats in order to ensure its freshness. While you never know what will have been caught, you can be sure that whatever you order will be the best money can buy. Robert and his team will skin, bone, fillet and prepare your seafood the way you want it - they will even give you advice and tips on how to cook it yourself.
The exciting new addition to Latimers is its seafood café. Here, the ethos continues: produce is sourced locally and every dish is prepared on the premises - except for the bread, which is handmade by a local artisan baker. Crab sandwiches, seafood platters, dressed crab and lobsters and fresh steamed mussels are just a taste of what to expect. Follow with a homemade cake, scone or one of the locally made ice creams or sorbets. A proper cup of coffee or a piping hot cup of tea is ideal after a walk on Whitburn Beach, or from Souter Lighthouse. Or, why not sit on the deck and admire the stunning views. Latimers is a small family business which prides itself on its friendly atmosphere - families with small children, nursing mums, and people in wheelchairs are all welcome. Latimers was awarded 'Best Local Retailer in the UK' at the BBC Food and Farming Awards, and also received the award for 'Independent Seafish Retailer of the Year' - and after just one visit you too will be singing its praises.
