Like being wrapped in a ten-tog duvet on a cold day, the warm cosy atmosphere of the Chequers Inn envelopes you as soon as you enter the bar. Dishes here are hearty and traditional, yet executed with contemporary flair. To start, demolish a tower of black pudding and goat’s cheese with balsamic onions, or delve into a bowl of Bantry Bay mussels languishing in a white wine, garlic and coriander sauce. To follow, keep things traditional with steak and ale pie – crammed with Yorkshire beef and bitter and accompanied by homemade chips and fresh vegetables; or opt for a creamy bowl of butternut squash and asparagus risotto, served with melted goat’s cheese – perfect, not just for vegetarians, but for anyone looking for some serious comfort food. Meat lovers will adore the grill, which offers plump burgers and juicy steaks, all served with a range of tempting accompaniments. Smaller appetites are indulged with a choice of light bites, salads and sandwiches, filled with such mouth-watering goodies as Wensleydale with tomato, baby leaf and Branston pickle, or Brie and grape, and if you fancy something warmer, hot roast beef and gravy.
