Easily found along the Caerleon Road from Cwmbran to Ponthir, The Gate at Llanfrechfa has been an inn, pub or hostelry since the 16th century. After closing for two years, this traditional pub was lovingly refurbished to an exceptionally high standard in 2012 by current owners Julie and James Dawson.
Open seven days a week for lunch and dinner, and offering traditional roasts on Sundays, The Gate's welcoming hosts and their team will make you feel right at home. Food served is of premium quality, produce is fresh and locally sourced where possible, and the owners take pride in ensuring everything is prepared on-site.
Leading the kitchen team is award-winning chef Jon Fryer, whose experience really shows in the quality of the food. A three-course evening meal might start with pork belly and black pudding terrine, sautéed king prawns, or freshly cooked gnocchi for vegetarians. This could be followed by Welsh lamb and wild mushroom meatballs with tagliatelle, or perhaps a hearty Welsh steak. Round off your meal with cheesecake of the day, a raspberry parfait or the Welsh cheeseboard. Don't forget to check the specials board, as it features a selection of fish dishes and vegetarian options that are rotated throughout the week. A great choice of real ale, beer, cider and wine is also available to accompany your meal.
For something a little bit different, book in for one of The Gate's speciality nights. These evenings usually involve fine food and wines themed around specific experiences - previous events have included a sampling session of single malt whiskies and a Bastille Day gourmet night with a French inspired menu. For details of upcoming events, be sure to check out The Gate's website.
Whether you choose to drop by for a meal or a drink in the cosy bar, you're sure to be well looked after by the attentive staff. This country pub is also dog-friendly, with four-legged friends welcome in the bar area and outside. There's always a good time to visit The Gate, as the outdoor patio is an ideal spot for pub lunches in summer, while huddling around the open log fire in the lounge bar is recommended on chilly winter evenings
