Not far from Newport lies The Three Blackbirds, a traditional pub with a modern twist. Managed by Paul Gavin and Melanie Jones, it has been recently-refurbished and is now placed firmly in the 21st Century, with spacious seating set within a contemporary style of decor. A wide range of food is on offer including traditional pub meals, fish, burgers, a grill selection or lighter meals such as salads and baguettes. A good choice of wines is included, and a Sunday roast is also on offer for £7.25.
Our meal began with the flavoursome hearty beef broth, served with fresh artisan bread, and a tasty cod and parsley fishcake, served with crisp salad and lime mayonnaise. Other starters on offer were aromatic duck spring rolls or crispy garlic king prawns, with prices ranging from £3.50 to £5.95.
To follow I chose the chef's pie of the day - haggis, swede and potato pie served with mashed potato, carrots, peas and gravy. The pie was both generous in size and rich in flavour, and priced at a very reasonable £6.95. My partner opted for succulent Sicilian chicken, which was filled with mozzarella, mushrooms and pesto and wrapped in Parma ham, served with sautéed new potatoes and spinach. For dessert we managed to squeeze in the hot pudding of the day - a scrumptious chocolate sponge - and a tangy lemon tart, both served with cream.
The menu is changed every six months, with specials including soup of the day, pie of the day and hot pudding of the day. Families are welcome and a children's menu is available upon request. A function room can be hired out for various events, as can additional sections of the pub if more space is required. Also on offer is the Diamond Club card, a discount card for over 60's allowing 25 per cent off all main menu items.
Reasonable prices and fresh, hearty food: the Three Blackbirds exemplifies modern dining whilst retaining the comfort and appeal of the good old British pub.
