Positano Ristorante Italiano

Positano has an enviably central location, and boasts some of Cardiff's biggest attractions as neighbours - the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff Castle and, of course, the fantastic shopping. However, once welcomed through the doors, the bustling pace of the city is left far behind. Reminiscent of a leisurely Sunday afternoon, the laid back ambience is perfect for any event from business lunches to intimate family get-togethers. This delightful Italian restaurant has stood the test of time in an ever-changing capital, having first opened in the 1970s. Many a venue has come and gone in the city - all the while Positano draws back a loyal clientele. This is certainly down to the expansive choice and quality of the food.

Such a setting enticed me to experiment and go for something I had never tried before. My main course of faggiano al mirtillo - pheasant breast stuffed with sage and onion, rolled in bacon and cooked in porto wine and cranberry sauce was meltingly tender, with a wonderful depth of flavour, and a fantastic choice to follow my starter of crespelle con ricotta - an oven-baked pancake filled with ricotta and spinach. At Positano the desserts are equally as impressive as the starters and main courses. I indulged in a rich caramel ice cream sandwiched between two layers of vanilla ice cream with a toffee caramel sauce, almond toffee chunks and coated with chocolate balls - just wicked.

It is not easy to describe the scale of choice available from the many menus. A special set lunch menu offering two courses for £8.95 is available Sunday through Monday until 5pm, with no less than 19 main-course choices.

The early evening menu is similarly priced at £9.95 and includes spaghetti con calamari for seafood lovers, pollo alla crema - chicken in a cream sauce, as well as fresh fish, meat and vegetarian dishes, all with Italian flavour. Additionally, an extensive à la carte menu ensures wonderful choices spanning all varieties of Italian cuisine are on offer - Positano really has to be seen, and tasted, to be believed.
