Bar Cava is an unexpected treasure situated on the beach front of Torquay. Standing very proudly between two traditional chippies, this gorgeous, quirky eatery offers the discerning 21st-Century customer a cool venue in which to chill out and soak up the beach vibe. The owners have taken inspirational elements of various international cultures and opened this informal restaurant, providing great food and drinks in an idyllic setting with lots of girly glamour touches. Using all fresh and local produce, the menu reflects their continental influences but still provides some firm family favourites; homemade burgers (from £5.50), paninis (from £3.50), pastas (from £6.90) and hearty breakfasts too.
But it is the delightful tapas selection that sets Bar Cava apart from the usual seaside cafés. Start with an assorted plate of cured meats, cheeses and fish with some bread (£4.50), then add a dish of Cajun chicken – sticky with garlic and lemon (£4.90) – and a glass of cold sauvignon blanc (£3.90), and you could find that sitting outside at a wooden table and looking across the beautiful bay is the perfect way to laze away an afternoon. But if you call up some friends and share the prawns with tequila, sweet chilli and lime (£6.90), the chorizo and feta salad (£4.50) and the mussels with salsa verde (£5.90), before you know it you’ll be ordering the paella marinara (£10.90) and looking at the cocktail list. Using premium ingredients the friendly bar staff shake up a great range of drinks ranging from the modern gal’s Cosmopolitan to party favourite Harvey Wallbanger.
Bar Cava is casual enough for you to come straight from the beach with the kids during the day for the thinnest pizzas (from £6.90) and skinny fries with garlic mayo (£1.70), yet sophisticated enough to linger over a late night dinner for two (£29.50). There should be a Bar Cava in every seaside resort, but I’m slipping on my sparkly flip-flops and being a beach babe right here.
