Bringing Sri Lanka to Sutton, Serendip is situated on a suburban main road amongst a cluster of fast-food haunts. This stylish restaurant, however, specialises in unique, authentic Indo-Sri-Lankan cuisine with robust flavouring. Atmospheric lighting, simple decor and attentive staff create a warm and welcoming ambience in the main dining room, while a well-equipped function room is available for private bookings. To start we enjoyed cashew nut pakora and scrumptious spiced fish cutlets. My main course of Negombo fish curry was a triumph of subtly blended herbs and spices, the aromas dizzying and the textures divine. My companion’s devilled squid (a Sri Lankan speciality) was wonderfully moreish and complemented perfectly by a fresh naan bread. The wattalapam – a rich pudding of Malay origin made of coconut milk, brown palm sugar, cashew nuts and eggs – provided a sweet finish to a fantastic evening.
