In a prime spot next to the river you’ll find a charming slice of history – The Bear Free House & Kitchen. Dating back to 1662, this pleasingly traditional establishment has been returned to the lively tavern it once was following an extensive refurbishment, and now offers lucky Stratford-upon-Avon patrons a fantastic range of cask ales, lagers, ciders, fine wines and a host of hearty British dishes.
The bar and dining area, warmed by crackling log fires, was immensely inviting on the cold, wet night we visited – and obviously many others felt the same way, as the place was chock-full with both locals and visitors. To begin, we couldn’t resist trying the mini chorizo sausages roasted in honey, along with crispy squid and salmon confit. These satisfying starters were followed by equally tasty mains of steak and ale pie for me and beer-battered fish for my companion, both accompanied by perfectly al dente vegetables and crispy fries. Even after such a generous feast, we just had to order the coconut creme brulée and perfectly made coffees for dessert.
Throughout our visit the staff were friendly and attentive, and the buzzing atmosphere gave the impression that everyone was thoroughly enjoying a relaxed and well-deserved break – including us. With great food and drink, an outdoor seating area and discreet flat-screen televisions showing major sporting events, The Bear is the kind of pub everyone wants as their local.
