This highly praised pub offers everything you could want from an old English inn. It was built 400 years ago, and featured in ITV wartime detective drama Foyle’s War. Fishpool Street remains unchanged since the 19th Century, and in the bar there’s an old photograph displaying buildings that still stand today. The menu changes regularly and features classics like ham, egg and chips, chilli con carne and homemade burgers. There’s also a great selection of sandwiches, jacket potatoes and wraps. You can wash it all down with one of Lower Red Lion’s ales, many of which are from local breweries – enjoy them alfresco in the beer garden, or in the cosy bar during winter. Don’t miss Lower Red Lion’s popular special evenings – there’s a quiz every Wednesday and fish and chips every Friday. A number of delightful guest rooms are available, and visitors can enjoy a hearty breakfast the following morning.
