This restaurant is for those who feel that chatting and superb dining should be the focal point of an evening out. The Supper Rooms reminds me of forgotten days when people would spend entire evenings around the table, simply enjoying good food and conversation.
The traditional yet unique Edwardian-style decor adds to a sense that you will be utterly pampered here. Sumptuous and satisfying food adorns regularly changing menus – new owners Terry and Reham should be very proud. After our buffet hors d’oeuvre came a tureen of fabulous spicy chickpea soup with tahini yoghurt, showcasing Reham’s North African influence. Entrées followed the soup, which in turn were followed by a cool, cleansing sorbet to ready us for the main attraction. I thoroughly relished my cod loins marinated in North African spices with ginger and garlic, boiled rice, carrot ribbons and broccoli florets, and my partner enjoyed his beef and mushroom suet crusted pie, which had been slowly cooked in red wine and then served with creamed horseradish mash and a Worcester sauce reduction – just two of the four dishes on offer when we visited.
We were glad of a pause, because then came the finale – seven heavenly desserts including traditional favourites like an enormous bread and butter pudding with fresh cream, through to hazelnut choux buns with warm chocolate sauce and oranges in fruit coulis with sweetened mascarpone cheese. We both had fantastic double chocolate sundaes with ice cream but, with eyes bigger than our bellies, we accepted a second dessert each, and then my partner somehow managed a third – this is somewhere you can have your cake and eat it, and then have somebody else’s as well.
Sunday lunch is a four-course affair at £19.95 – children under ten eat free, over tens for half price – or the four-course dinner is £24.50 from Monday to Thursday, but the six-course dinner banquet is for true gourmands at £29.95 on Fridays and Saturdays. Gather family and friends and discover the pleasures of truly indulgent dining out.
