Oyster Quay overlooks the river Hamble and the picturesque Mercury Yacht Harbour. It may be hard to find the first time you try, but after eating here, you are sure to remember the way to this low-key, first-class establishment.

You enter through the bar, and immediately your attention is galvanised by bright blue walls and large French windows, which filter the light and nicely frame impressive views. The interior is thankfully simplistic – white walls adorned with seafaring pictures.

The menu, however, is vast and will please most palates. Snacks and sandwiches are served during the day, gourmet meals and traditional favourites in the evening. On Sundays a carvery is available between noon and 4pm, and on Thursdays the all-you-can-eat Indian buffet includes live music. A varied children’s menu is available.

To start, try the sharing seafood platter: the huge serving of fiery prawns, whitebait, salmon tails, cod goujons and plaice is wonderful. Then, go for grilled sea bass served with a light champagne, mushroom, and garlic sauce atop wilted spinach and crushed new potatoes. Hearty carnivores be advised: the lamb shank is a must. This delightful dish is served with mint-infused red wine jus on a bed of mashers.

The desserts appeal to the little devil on your one shoulder, and the serene views, efficient service, and sizeable portions make Oyster Quay a favourite with the little guy on your other shoulder.
