You wouldn't automatically associate tapas with Thai food, but this innovative concept works extremely well, allowing diners to try a range of dishes or just enjoy a snack with a glass of wine. Furnished simply with wooden floors and tables and Asian-influenced artwork, it exudes warmth and understated charm. Even on our mid-week visit Mango was packed, and it's easy to understand why it has such a draw.

We opted to share a couple of tapas as starters. A wide assortment of vegetable tempura included peppers, aubergines and sugarsnap peas coated in a light and crispy batter, served with a tangy sweet chilli dipping sauce, while crispy squid was deep fried with coriander, pepper and a wonderful spicy coating. The portions were satisfyingly large - which is just as well as everything was incredibly moreish. Our main courses included a glistening mound of pad Thai, complete with soft melting noodles, tiger king prawns, bean sprouts and crunchy vegetables. My guest favoured a succulent, steamy Panang beef curry, complemented perfectly by luscious coconut rice.

The delightful serving staff are English, but the food tasted so authentic that it was no surprise to discover the head chef and kitchen team are all Thai. This is a true taste of South East Asia in Southampton.
