For traditional Mexican cuisine in a contemporary setting, head to La Baronia. This newly opened, stylish restaurant and bar boasts fantastic food and friendly, enthusiastic staff who are on hand to explain the authentic and extensive menu – it’s really no surprise that this eatery is frequently at full capacity.
La Baronia is the latest business venture of Paul Thompson. With the help of their very experienced and personable Mexican head chef, Carlos Cruz, they have created a restaurant to feed the need for real Mexican food. All dishes use high-quality ingredients sourced from both Southampton and London, and are freshly prepared on the premises. We shared the popular and fun ‘guacamole party’ to start – a generous serving of tacos with beans, fresh cheese, salsa, jalapenos and tomatoes – followed by the Mexican-style 8oz rib-eye steak and the flautas de pollo (tacos with chicken, vegetables, salsa, cream cheese, coriander and onion). Both main courses were colourful, flavoursome and artistically presented as was the traditional Mexican tangy lime cake that we enjoyed for dessert, on the recommendation of the manager.
During our visit to La Baronia the restaurant was teeming with happy, well-fed guests. What’s more, there was a steady stream of hopeful diners coming in through the door having been drawn in off the street by the appeal of the candlelit tables, mellow lighting and buzzing atmosphere, with Mexican music playing unobtrusively in the background. Outside is a large, contemporary decked area with Continental café-style seating as well as church pews. There are plans to provide patio heaters to extend alfresco dining opportunities into the cooler months, as well as Sunday salsa nights that should prove very popular with the locals.
La Baronia truly offers the full package – great food, a vibrant atmosphere and friendly, knowledgeable staff – and is refreshingly easy on the wallet. What more could you ask for?
