Situated in the heart of South East London on the Old Kent Road, 805 Restaurant is a particularly popular and esteemed venue. From the outset, my guest and I had a sense of being transported to a place far away. The restaurant’s charismatic, vibrant atmosphere, up-tempo background music and cultural paintings, combined with a plush interior, set the scene for a very enjoyable evening. There is also a special VIP area to take advantage of on special occasions.
We decided to treat ourselves to some typical Nigerian dishes, and plumped for starters of pepper soup and chicken suya. If you’re not accustomed to a high level of spice, the heat of the soup may come as a bit of a surprise. However, the taste was astounding; the spices combined to make for a flavourful first course. The stand-out dish of the night had to be the grilled Monica fish I enjoyed as my main course, served whole with plantain and salad. It was a credit to the chef. We concluded what had been an undeniably fine feast with desserts of scrummy sticky toffee pudding and vanilla ice cream. Our first wondrous African dining adventure at 805 will certainly not be our last – in fact, we plan to bring friends and family along for the ride next time too.
