Set upon the cliffs in Cliftonville, with stunning sea views, this serene family-run hotel is the perfect place for escape. The Victorian building is a splendid spot to quench a thirst for something tasty, thanks to its well-equipped bar and enthusiastic, knowledgeable bar staff - I was thrilled to try the 'Dune Buggy' cocktail, a fruity concoction of liqueurs and schnapps presented on my arrival. We visited midweek and the large function room was full while the lounge buzzed with the sound of guests enjoying live music. The staff here have a genuine desire to make your visit as pleasurable as they can and are happy to arrange entertainment, so planning a special event couldn't be easier.
Once my tastebuds had been tantalised by that decadent drink, it was through to the Orangery restaurant for something a little more substantial. Tranquil in its decor, with pressed white linens and fresh flowers aplenty, the eatery exudes a fresh and light ambience in which to enjoy the fantastic food on offer. Natural light illuminates the tables through grand windows - the reason the room is often chosen to hold wedding ceremonies.
The owners and the head chef talk proudly about the produce they use; fresh fish from both the Margate boat and Romney Marsh fisheries, meat from Monks Hill Farm and fruit from Stodmarsh. The use of fresh ingredients means that the menu is changed seasonally, so a return visit is well worth it. A dish of home-smoked duck with brandy sauce was sublime; the duck aromatic and cooked to perfection. The pan-fried crevettes marinated in chilli, coriander and lemon were full flavoured and juicy, and the roast lamb simply fell apart at the touch of a knife, onto crispy roast potatoes. Being situated so close to the harbour, Smiths Court always displays fishy treats such as plaice with a creamy béchamel sauce on its specials board. The homely desserts made on the premises are a rare pleasure and were the perfect end to our dining experience. The Smiths Court has so much to offer, so why not book one of the delightful rooms for the night and experience it all
