The Royal Shepherd’s pleasant location, on the banks of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, makes it an ideal pit-stop location. The new landlords, Natasha and Ben Oldfield, welcome everyone who comes through the door as a friend – whether you’ve arrived by boat, coach, car or are in need of a rest after a picturesque stroll, they will be ready to receive you.
This is a well-kept and recently refurbished traditional pub that, while small, still has plenty of places in which to unwind. A log and coal burning fireplace in the snug area can warm your feet, while the hospitable atmosphere and good food will warm your cockles. Natasha and Ben will also be happy to explain some of the pub’s unique history – having been awarded a royal charter, it’s the only Royal Shepherd in England.
The menu features great-value family favourites and the bar stocks a wide range of beers and wines. We enjoyed a wonderful three course meal that was full of excellent flavours at equally excellent value. A particularly pleasant note about the meal was that my dessert, a tasty apple crumble, was made with apples from the neighbour’s garden. With such substantial portions offered at very reasonable prices, guests will never leave here hungry or out of pocket.
