Front Street, Thirsk, Sowerby-under-Cotcliffe, YO7 1JF

After a day at Thirsk Races, it is a short drive to these converted farm buildings which are tucked away behind Front Street - look for the elegant green hanging sign and turn in the gateway to the car park and entrance. The bar has comfy brown leather sofas and the restaurant is spacious and well lit. On our table, set with large white linen napkins, a silver candelabra with four flickering candles provided a romantic setting.
An elegant à la carte dinner menu offers a selection of starters, including pan-seared king scallops with a sun-dried Parma ham, avocado and coriander salsa, or you could try the Oriental Thai fish cake served with a chilli lime noodle 'slaw' salad. Traditional main courses include North Atlantic line-caught sea bass fillet, Whitby haddock and chips, Gressingham duck breast, fettuccine and four cuts of prime beef - your choice of fillet, sirloin, rump or rib-eye cooked to your taste. On Sundays, there's a Feasting Menu for four people - a whole rib of beef, roast pork loin or leg of lamb is brought to your table for you to carve (pre-order your roast before noon on Friday). The wine list offers a worldwide choice including sauvignon blanc from France and New Zealand, malbec from Argentina, montepulciano from Italy and a very good Fleurie Domaine Pardon which drank all too easily
