The tall town clock may dominate the bustling cobbled square in Thirsk but, for me, there is a greater attraction in this postcard-perfect town. That attraction would be the Black Lion Bar & Bistro, which sits pretty on Market Place and offers delicious food with more than a hint of homeliness. As you enter this remarkable, cosy bistro, the warm ambience and the chatter of contented diners and eager-to-please staff help to dispel all stresses.
Owner Paul Binnington - a more cheery and convivial host you'll never meet - greeted us and showed us to our table, where we perused head chef Harrison Barraclough's AA-rosette-winning seasonal menu. I opted for smoked mackerel with beetroot, squid and watercress followed by tender Black Mountain venison with black pudding, sprout leaves and carrot purée. My wife chose the smoked duck with figs and Parma ham before taking on the enormous seafood platter consisting of excellent quality salmon, prawns, smoked mackerel, scampi and goujons with dressed salad and sauces. We were both hugely impressed, and our neighbouring diners clearly were too, as we saw them happily tucking into delicious steaks. Oh, and the blackberry parfait dessert is not to be missed - trust me.
Our meal at the Black Lion proved that this could very quickly become a favourite haunt. As it's so easy to drive here from York, a visit for Sunday lunch will be in order to enjoy more great cooking
