County Hotel

Set on the main street of this historic Borders town, the County Hotel has an interesting heritage which spans over 400 years. In its current guise, the building represents a fine example of a country pub, with its exposed brickwork, two open fires and wood panelling.

The County offers an extensive menu of home-cooked food, with many products sourced locally. Made fresh on-site daily, the food is of a high quality and reasonably priced, with starters and desserts costing from £2.99 and main courses from £6.99. Of particular note is the fish and chips - a massive portion of North Atlantic haddock served with golden chips and peas. The fish was flaky and melted in the mouth, and the batter added just enough crunch to contrast. A daily specials board adds extra variety and is worthy of a read before ordering. Alongside the food, the site has four cask-ale pumps, a great selection of Continental lagers, an extensive wine menu and a selection of over 30 malt whiskies.
