Early last century, more and more Italian folk were headed for America - bringing with them knowledge of their nation's irresistible food. When they combined this with all the tasty new ingredients they found stateside, a new generation of Italian-American cooking was born. And that's exactly what Frankie & Benny's is all about today. Here's the tale as it's told...
From the moment little Frankie landed in New York with his Mamma and Papa back in 1924, he watched them cook his old Italian favourites - with tasty new American ingredients and a whole lot of passion. They even opened a restaurant to share their new style of food with the neighbourhood. It was this restaurant that inspired a young Frankie. So once he grew up, he took over the restaurant with his American school buddy, Benny, and started serving up this New York- Italian home cooking to anybody who wanted a taste - and that turned out to be just about everybody.
Today, the mouth-watering menu continues to combine bold stateside flavours with traditional Italian classics. Legendary burgers include the juicy Brooklyn beef burger, loaded high with smoky BBQ pulled beef, and for meat defeaters there's the Manhattan waffle burger, a juicy burger topped with a sweet American waffle and drizzled with smoky BBQ sauce. For all no-knife-and-forkers there's a great range of pizzas and fully loaded calzones. I recommend a delicious Roman smoky pizza, or the ultimate mac 'n' cheese calzone: a folded pizza stuffed with mac 'n' cheese, pulled pork and BBQ sauce. Tasty pasta dishes, like the classic Frankie & Benny's meatballs on a pile of spaghetti, with mozzarella and freshly baked Italian bread sticks, mustn't be forgotten. And finally, for all home-cooking lovers, the saltimbocca chicken and home-baked rosemary breads will go down a treat.
