Conveniently located in the centre of the city, Navadhanya is a true gem serving authentic Indian food with a contemporary twist. Its modest frontage would be easy to overlook in the bustle of the busy street, but those in the know would suggest you pay a visit, as inside you’ll experience Indian dining at its finest. The decor is minimalist and elegant, and the warm welcome from the staff at the door quickly establishes what is a friendly and intimate atmosphere. On the recommendation of the owner we opted for the seven-course tasting menu and were not disappointed. Each dish was flavoursome, creative and beautifully presented, with each new plate somehow better than the last.
Our appetites were satisfied by a delightful amuse-bouche. Next came succulent king prawns cooked in a delicious combination of spices, and masala dosa – a wafer-thin crêpe made from rice and filled with spiced potatoes – which we devoured in a matter of minutes. The lamb pasaliyan featuring exquisitely cooked prime Scottish lamb rack was mouth-wateringly tender on the inside and perfectly crisp on the outside.
The pride taken in the preparation of the food is reflected in the attention to detail, from the cloud of cabbage mousse served with the prawns to the light and delicate naan bread and each of the different chutneys and sauces. The creative use of spices is clear in every plateful – the chicken chettinadu alone is flavoured with an astounding 18 different spices – and yet the complex flavours are all beautifully balanced without being overpowering. The sharp and sweet raspberry sorbet was a well-placed refresher mid-way through the meal, before we finished with a delectable saffron-poached pear served with kulfi. For liquid refreshment I opted for a mango lassi, which was a refreshing accompaniment to the food.
Navadhanya is the perfect destination for a special occasion, and there’s a variety of menu options to suit all budgets, whether you’re looking to celebrate or simply fancy a casual dinner for two. After such a beautiful culinary experience I’m already planning my return visit
