Since 1962 Hendersons has been one of Edinburgh’s vegetarian hotspots. Having started out as an outlet for Mac and Janet’s farm produce, Hendersons is now a fully fledged vegetarian and vegan restaurant, serving Edinburgh’s foodies locally and ethically sourced produce. Over the decades, Hendersons has grown rapidly and now also boasts a deli and a bistro.
The menu is carefully set out so you can see exactly which ingredients are in every dish, so many of the dishes can also be prepared for gluten- and nut-free diets. The imaginative menu changes regularly to showcase the best of the season’s produce. You’ll find starters like freekah salad with kale, butternut squash, pear, red grapes, and almond flakes drizzled with cumin and maple dressing. Representing amazingly good value for money, the menu features small plates like cured carrot rye bread bruschetta topped with lemon and dill cashew cream, and the popular stuffed courgette with smoked garlic and creamy vegan cheese risotto with crispy capers. Perhaps Hendersons’ most popular dish is their vegan haggis served with steamed and pickled turnips, roasted Brussels sprouts and tarragon whisky sauce -- the perfect Scottish vegan plate. If you have room for dessert, direct your attention to the specials board to see what tasty vegan sweets are on offer each day.
