The Hawes Inn is a place steeped in history. This rustic 17th-Century inn not only plays host to superb views of the Firth of Forth shore, but also lies in the shadows of the world-famous cantilever Forth Railway Bridge and the Forth Road Bridge - one of the largest suspension bridges in Europe. The inn itself has a chequered history, reincarnated several times, as a changing house for stagecoaches and a hospital for workers injured whilst building Forth Rail Bridge. Throughout its lifetime, it has inspired authors such as Robert Louis Stevenson and Sir Walter Scott, and is even mentioned in the Doomsday Book.

The Hawes Inn has a very pleasant and welcoming atmosphere and, although it seats up to 200 customers, the layout is less than sprawling; in fact there is an 'old world' feel to it. Catering for an intimate meal for two or a meal out with the family, The Hawes can also provide facilities to host meetings or functions, with its private room that holds up to 20 delegates. Now part of the successful Vintage Inns collection, this delightful pub has retained its individuality, demonstrated through the homecooked food, the decor and the nostalgic pieces of furniture dotted about the place, reflecting the age of the building. The inn's food menu offers over 30 dishes to choose from and, once ordered, the service is speedy and friendly. Hearty starters of breaded mushrooms, or grilled chicken and chorizo skewers can be followed by such mains as organically reared salmon, baby potatoes and perfectly al dente seasonal vegetables. The roasted sweet potato and asparagus salad was an encouragingly appetising and extremely tasty vegetarian option. All portion sizes are substantial; the food is well presented with a mixture of colour and textures.

The Hawes Inn provides comforting classic pub cuisine with a few unexpected surprises, it offers good value for money and has extremely helpful staff. Welcoming the whole family, The Hawes Inn has a car park for your convenience and a large garden to the rear for languid summer days.
