We were warmly welcomed into the beautiful Courtyard Bistro. Crisply laundered white linen tablecloths and napkins evoked timeless elegance, yet the bistro remains unpretentious, the service friendly and effortlessly professional, with soft music and subtle lighting adding to the relaxing ambience. We started with a warm Cajun chicken and rocket salad with beetroot pesto dressing, and an avocado and seafood mousseline with herbed mayonnaise and chiffonade of smoked salmon. Our sumptuous and outstandingly crafted main courses were succulent corn-fed chicken breast stuffed with chorizo and black pudding, wrapped in streaky bacon; and a subtle and delicate combination of grilled fillet of salmon on asparagus with marinated peppers. The seasonal vegetarian dishes always present tantalising flavours - try Thai-style vegetable green curry with tempura vegetables, or a whole pepper stuffed with spinach and sweet potato, flavoured with garlic, chilli and toasted pine nuts. To finish, I polished off a silky white chocolate creme brûlée, while my companion enjoyed a selection of exquisite Loch Arthur cheeses. After dinner we sipped coffee and brandy in the traditional hotel bar.
With 32 bedrooms, a garden room and an attractive fountain set in pretty grounds, The Best Western Station Hotel is a perfect location in itself, and provides a perfect base from which to visit Dumfries and Galloway.
