Just minutes from the A1, the Shoulder of Mutton is an old pub with plenty of character, offering some very pleasant surprises. There aren’t many restaurants where you can casually stroll in, make a considered request of oysters followed by lobster Thermidor, and lo and behold, they’ll be available within 24 hours. Such is the versatility of this gastropub that almost anything is possible. For lunch and dinner, the Savoy-trained chef has created a comprehensive menu offering seasonal, locally sourced food – not to mention the specials board and catch of the day. The menu changes frequently, but may include starters such as baked Camembert or garlic queen scallops and mains such as Oriental belly pork and monkfish and king prawns in a Thai broth. Upstairs, a sumptuous private dining room is available for conferences and functions. The wine list is eclectic and owners Kevin and Fran Hacking are as obliging as can be.
