For exceptional Thai food, look no further than Bangkok Lounge, the winner of the St Albans District Chamber of Commerce’s ‘Best Restaurant Award’. In Harpenden, Shefford and Barton-le-Clay, these exceptional restaurants offer outstanding service and a huge range of dishes at any time of the day. Check their website or Facebook page (www.facebook.com/bangkoklounge) for the latest news.

We visited the elegantly furnished Harpenden restaurant, tucked away at the end of the High Street, and were warmly greeted by proprietor Motin Miah. Inside there’s a refined ambience that’s utterly relaxing; due in part to Motin’s evident love for his profession. Food and drink streamed to our table, our every wish being granted so unobtrusively, we couldn’t fail to be impressed. An extensive menu offers a wealth of choice, with set menus to suit all palates and budgets. Equally delightful is the wine list, featuring everything from house wines by the glass to special-occasion wines.

Bangkok Lounge’s award-winning chefs use the freshest ingredients, blending them with extraordinary subtlety to create a fusion of flavour in every mouthful. We began with steamed mussels in Thai herbs served in steaming broth, containing dozens of contrasting flavours but not overwhelmed by one. Deep-fried king prawns with sweet chilli sauce were the perfect precursor to the steamed whole sea bass with chilli sauce in a fresh lemon and lime dressing – a skilful blend of flavours. The jungle curry was a masterpiece, accompanied by steaming bowls of jasmine rice and crisp vegetables in garlic and soy sauce, served with a mountain of sizzling tempura vegetables.

In addition to the à la carte menu, Motin’s ‘seven days a week’ offer (with lunch from only £5.95) attracts a bustling trade during the day and offers exceptional quality for unbelievable value. Takeaways are also available for collection, with a generous 15-per-cent discount offered on orders over £18. Reading the many testimonials from satisfied customers on their website, it’s no surprise to find Bangkok Lounge is one of the most popular Thai restaurants in the area. But don’t just take my word for it, head there and discover this Thai temptress for yourself.
