Situated amidst the winding cobbled streets of Plymouth's regenerated Barbican area, Yukisan provides an oasis of contemporary Eastern calm. The 110-seat restaurant - set over three floors - is decorated in cool cream and black with flashes of red; on one level there is a spacious oriental dining room; on another, a more intimate Japanese space with traditional floor seating.
The predominately Japanese menu, offering a wide choice of seafood, meat, noodle and rice dishes, was carefully explained to us by the graceful staff, and all dishes were exquisitely presented, complemented by an extensive drinks selection that includes the traditional warm saké. The tempura king prawns, along with Gyoza (pan-fried meat dumplings), Suzuk (sea bass sushi) and Shake (salmon sushi), were light and delicate, the accompanying ginger, wasabi and soy sauce highlighting the freshness of the fish. Our main courses were superb; the wasabi steak, a succulent sirloin marinated in soy and pan-grilled, and steamed sea bass, fragrant with spring onion and ginger, both came with rice, miso soup and a kiwi-dressed salad.

The gorgeous, creamy green tea ice cream, home-made by Yukisan, was divine and the perfect way to end such an impressive dinner. Yukisan's mixed clientele, including parties and children, enjoy a combination of wonderful food and relaxed hospitality in a truly delightful restaurant.
