Your table beside the sea awaits you at The Waterfront Restaurant on Plymouth's Hoe. Only a five minute walk from the city centre, yet worlds apart, this is as close to the sea as you can get without getting wet. Relax inside this elegant restaurant or put on your jumper and sit on the nautical deck with its wonderful sea view. Watch the ocean, the boats, the birds - or simply watch each other indulging in the fabulous food.
The restaurant has plenty to offer. Most of the stunning food is sourced within a 20-mile radius - links with local fishmongers, farmers and lobster suppliers are highly valued here. The Waterfront is run by Steve Bowen and Nic Barber, whose extensive knowledge of lobster undoubtedly means it takes pride of place on the menu. Ask your server to show you the lobster tank and then try the lobster frites served with lobster butter - a recipe using 14 herbs and spices - or go all the way to the top with a lobster pot for two people - a feast of whole lobster, crab claws, mussels, and shell-on and king prawns.
Starters include such classics as lobster bisque, River Yealm oysters, local crab cakes or, if you're more of a land lubber, carpaccio of beef served with Brie from Sharpham's Vineyard. Move on to a main course of tournedos Rossini, lamb, surf and turf, or one of the other mouth-watering delights. Vegetarians are catered for and a selection of sides are also available. Try to save room for a decadent dessert, or try a cheeseboard where you will be assured of a real taste of the West Country - blues, Cheddars and Brie, all from local producers.
As you would expect, there is a well-stocked bar and an excellent wine list. The bar menu, just as exciting as the à la carte, includes lobster, moules frites, fish and chips, classic salads, trio of sausages, nachos - or just get yourself all mucky with a pint of shell-on prawns.
