The Baba is a family-run business which has been established in Plymouth for 14 years; its doors are always open to those looking for a spice-filled exotic night and a world of culinary creativity. The restaurant offers around 200 covers for diners wanting a pleasant evening with polite and efficient service. It is located near the popular Barbican area of Plymouth - just a five-minute walk from the city centre.
Here you'll find beautifully presented food, made using Baba's original secret homemade spice mixes. The eatery serves dishes at affordable prices and certainly delivers quality as well as quantity. With a large selection of Indian specialities to start, such as crispy onion bhajis and fish-filled samosas, the dining experience offered here is familiar and mouth-watering.
The chef's speciality section offers the most succulent and aromatic variety of dishes I have ever had the pleasure of sampling; the tandoori king prawn dish, immersed in an array of spices and baked in the clay tandoor until the prawns are fully infused and fragrant, and then served with elegant simplicity with a side of Indian salad, was a particular favourite.
The lamb banarasi is a spicy choice served in a medium-hot sauce, with meat so tender and flavoursome it must have fallen straight off the bone and into its tastebud-tingling marinade - this dish really packs a punch. Sides of saag aloo (potato with spinach) and egg bhuna are the perfect accompaniments. The desserts offer an assortment of refreshing palate cleansers; among the options you'll find crisp and fruity sorbets and light and creamy coconut ice cream, served rather seductively in half a coconut shell.
Baba Indian has a warm and colourful atmosphere with comfortable candlelit tables and artefacts from India scattered throughout. All this cumulates in a dining experience that feels thousands of miles away from sunny Devon.
