The stunning Prysten House, tucked behind St Andrews Church, has been home to Tanners Restaurant for 12 years. The Tanner brothers, Chris and James, showcase the superb ingredients available to them in the West Country, including line-caught fi sh bought from local day boats. Their talents have won them a coveted award – the AA ‘Restaurant of the Year’ for 2007-08 – and their success continues.

Tanners is open Tuesday to Saturday for lunch and dinner, with menus changing every two to four weeks. Lunch is available from £14 for two courses, and dinner from £20 for three courses, complemented by a fantastic wine and Champagne list. Try a venison carpaccio with spring carrots, sorrel, confi t lime and toasted hazelnuts, followed by roast brill with wild garlic galette, smoked bacon, new season mushrooms and a spiced red wine sauce. Then fi nish with a banoffee souffl é served with clotted cream and bitter chocolate sauce. If this has tempted your tastebuds, you may wish to sample the tasting menu, with a wine matched to each course.

The Tanners dining rooms are a little piece of history, with an ancient well in one room – one of the original drinking sources for the settlers of Plymouth. Tanners also has a delightful private dining room and heated covered medieval courtyard.
