Amongst the bustling, trendy top end of Plymouth's city centre lies this charming and classy restaurant. For breakfast, lunch and evening meals, Shallyns is a perfect retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city; this is mainly due to its Venetian baroque theme, which offers an abundance of Continental elegance and lends a feeling of tranquillity to this gem of an eatery. Dramatic hues of black, red and gold coat the walls and furniture, and at the door you are greeted with warm, traditional etiquette by Shallyn herself.

Well-established and tempting delights are on offer from the French-trained chef, beginning with such delicacies as escargot and terrine. However, I started the evening with a mouth-watering medley of crispy bacon, succulent scallops and walnuts, dressed in a sweet yet acidic balsamic vinaigrette. It was the perfect prelude to the deliciousness to come. My main was a fine breast of duck, served pink with a delicious selection of buttery al dente vegetables and Dauphinois potatoes. The dessert list is overflowing with delights, from traditional bread and butter pudding and French-influenced creme brűlée to the fabulous palatecleansing 'mangomisu'. A creative adaptation of the original Italian tiramisu, but with a fresh mango twist and the devilish addition of white chocolate vodka, this wonderful creation is not for the faint-hearted. Our sweets were accompanied by a deliciously syrupy yet not too sticky muscat, just one of the many wines on offer from an extensive collection.

With a wide-ranging menu of high-quality, modern cuisine offered at reasonable prices, whisk yourself away for an evening of star treatment at the theatrical and welcoming Shallyns.
