Plymouth is a city to which Great Britain owes a lot. Alongside the building of ships for our once vast navy, it has always been a major fishing port; there is no better way of experiencing this heritage than by paying a visit to the oldest seafood restaurant in the city. Piermasters has nestled in the heart of The Barbican for over 30 years – a place often described as the jewel of Plymouth and once home to the city’s fish market.

From fresh fish sourced from the Channel waters, to the finest produce provided by farms in the rolling hills nearby, Piermasters is as local as it gets, and this quality shines through in a concise selection of well-thought-out dishes. The restaurant has been buying from the same small businesses for many years, allowing the menu to revolve around the availability of fresh ingredients. Taste a plate of succulent roasted monkfish with crushed Devon potatoes and a red wine, cream and shallot sauce. For those with a thirst to quench, look to the bespoke wine list, which even has a smattering of Piermasters’ own-label wines. If you prefer the grain over the grape, sample the great range of beers.

Special offers include a set lunch at £10 for two courses or £13.95 for three, both including a glass of house red or white wine – just one more reason why no trip to Plymouth is complete without a visit to the iconic Piermasters.
