At this quirky, stylish bar and restaurant, food and drink take equal precedence – both are well considered and well matched. The drinks selection complements the diverse food offering, making finding a beverage to accompany your meal a doddle. That’s not to say you can’t simply pop in for a pint – in fact, there was a lively mix of drinkers and diners when we visited. The menu features British classics, European favourites – including tapas – and unique specials. We began with calamari with lemon and tartare sauce and smoked haddock and spring onion fishcake, followed by confit duck leg with butternut squash and figs – an inspired combination – and succulent slow-roasted pork belly with bubble and squeak and green bean salad. We finished with light, creamy vanilla and green tea pannacotta and zingy lemon and lime cheesecake. There’s a popular jazz night on the third Wednesday of every month, although I recommend visiting this gem whenever you get a chance.
