The Mortimer Arms, just minutes from the M27 and adjacent to Paultons Park, is an elegant pub and restaurant with en-suite guest rooms. This Victorian dower house offers an amply stocked wooden bar plus two beautifully appointed dining rooms with garden views. On the recommendation of our waiter, we savoured glasses of crisp chardonnay with our bountiful platter of smoked salmon and dill mousse, gooey Brie wedges and creamy garlic mushrooms with truffle oil. Mains of roasted salmon fillet with lemongrass and lime noodles and slow-cooked beef brisket with horseradish mash were divine and demonstrated the skill of the team in the kitchen. We finished with chef Jack Henry’s sticky treacle tart with a dollop of clotted cream and a two scoops of New Forest ice cream. I spied the afternoon tea menu and vowed to return one day after a stroll in the New Forest. We’ve discovered a gem in The Mortimer Arms.
