The new owners of The Navigator, Upham Brewery, have brought with them their own range of Hampshire-brewed beers and an award-winning chef, Gareth Longhurst. Light dishes from his brand-new menu are available all day, but on our recent visit we were tempted by the à la carte menu. I plumped for salt beef croquettes with horseradish, Alresford watercress and Port syrup, which proved marvellously subtle and well-balanced. My partner’s main of slow-cooked pork belly with scallops on a chorizo and leek risotto was excellent – tender pork and scallops seared to perfection. My braised shin of beef with seared skirt steak, swede and potato gratin was pure class and came accompanied by a shallot purée and luxurious red wine sauce. We concluded with crumbly walnut cake, served with allspice parfait and bananas in toffee sauce.
