At the northern end of Dartmoor National Park, in amongst miles of verdant greenery and luscious woodland, is the Mill End Hotel. This bright white beacon of a building stands out not just for its immaculately kept and striking exterior, but for the 15 individually styled bedrooms and excellent restaurant that can be found within.
It’s not every day that you come across a venue that can match beautiful food to its beautiful surroundings, but Mill End truly steps up to the plate in this regard. A meal here could begin with a dish of pan-seared scallops served with black pudding and morsels of Granny Smith apple, or the equally delectable whipped Cornish Brie with a spiced carrot salad and truffle honey. Carry on with ale-braised beef cheek with rosti potato, kale and celeriac purée, or the vegetarian
wonder that is pearl barley and beetroot risotto. To end, the treacle tart with rhubarb, honeycomb and clotted cream would be a clear winner for dessert, although the coconut panna cotta could prove a contender.
Visit on a Sunday and you’ll be able to sample the Mill’s roast lunch menu. The roast Devonshire beef is a deliciously tender menu mainstay, but this weekend bill of fare changes often to reflect produce at its best. Frankly, though, whatever day you decide to pay a visit, the service here will be spot-on.
