Following its recent transformation into one of the UK’s very first oeno-gastropubs, The Vine in Great Bardfield really is the talk of the town. Co-owner Tanya Mann, who has 13 years of experience in the wine industry, and her husband Stephen, himself a former restaurant manager, have turned this establishment into a haven for food and wine lovers, combining unfussy, home-cooked food at a reasonable price with a unique organic wine-tasting experience. ‘English cuisine with a twist’ sums up the menu here – the black pearl scallops and lacquered duck breast are highly recommended – and expert Tanya is on hand to suggest a tipple to pair with each dish. Every last Saturday of the month, you can sample the eight-course taster menu for just £29. The ever-expanding wine list includes award-winning English sparkling wines, and exclusive imported wines from Austria and Tuscany. Wine-tasting evenings take place often and cost £15 per person, but places are limited, so it’s always best to book a spot quickly.
