There is nothing quite like the warmth and charm of an old English pub, and the pretty village of Duns Tew is fortunate indeed to have such a pub, namely the White Horse Inn. Proprietors Michael and Josh – who is also the chef – recently took over this delightfully cosy and atmospheric 17th-Century inn and have certainly made their mark, serving imaginative food, local ales and quality wines to the people of Duns Tew and visitors to the area.
Seated in the comfortable restaurant, complete with a warming wood-burner, we made our choices from the supper menu. My starter of spiced beetroot soup and sour cream was a winner – deep in colour and well-seasoned with a hint
of cumin, it was absolutely delicious. My husband’s taramasalata served with a soft egg and pickles was soon polished off. My main course, arroz con pollo – Calasparra rice and saffron chicken – was a colourful, flavoursome dish. The
tender fl at iron steak served with Béarnaise sauce, watercress and fries was declared a gastronomic delight across the table. Desserts of a chocolate and caramel pot and a generous portion of plum meringue rounded off a wonderful meal served by charming, friendly and efficient staff. Michael and Josh also offer eight newly refurbished rooms if you wish to stay. In my view, they have a wonderful pub and deserve every success.
