North Nottinghamshire should be proud of The Square & Compass, for it's the epitome of a great British country pub - low exposed beams, large open fire and a warm and inviting ambience.
The pub is located on the edge of the picturesque village of Normanton-on-Trent, and draws customers from all over the north of the county. It is a wonderfully spacious pub and restaurant with lots of parking space, large play areas for children and an extensive menu.
Food is uncomplicated, mostly British and reasonably priced. The menu offers traditional pub food as well as more exotic dishes to satisfy a range of tastes and appetites. Starters include king prawns in a sweet chilli marinade, soup of the day and chicken liver paté. For a hearty main, try the Lincolnshire sausages with spring onion mash, classic shepherd's pie or Mediterranean vegetables. Desserts include sticky toffee pudding and my personal favourite, a rich Italian chocolate fondant - delicious.
Cask ales on rotation include Abbot's Ale, Black Sheep and Spitfire. Sunday lunch is a not-to-be-missed experience, with a range of roasts served throughout the afternoon. Friendly and welcoming staff make drinking or dining at The Square & Compass an enjoyable experience - and well worth a trip to Normanton-on-Trent.
