Location: 47 Stoney Street, The Lace Market, Nottingham, NG1 1LX [map]

Open: Mon-Sat 6pm-midnight; Sun noon-4pm, 6pm-10.30pm

Scruffys occupies a charming basement space in Nottingham's trendy Lace Market. A warm glow from Moroccan-style lamps invites you to descend to the restaurant from street level. Here you find bare brick and terra cotta coloured walls which, with comfortable wooden tables and chairs, complete a look that is inviting and all too easy in which to relax and forget the time.

The restaurant aims to cater for all tastes with its extensive menu. Consider specialities such as the Scruffy Pie, which bursts with chunks of steak and mushroom in Guinness gravy; and the mixed grill, featuring lamp chop, gammon steak, rack of barbecued pork ribs, chicken, and two pork and leek sausages. Or, you could attempt to finish the Scruffy Burger, a monster plate of two home-made beef burgers, bacon, mushrooms and all the trimmings.

If you've still got room after the generous portions served up for both starters and main courses, you'll find it difficult to not be tempted by the naughty selection of desserts. All priced £3.95, my hands-down favourite is the Chocolate Junkyard, a chocolate pastry filled with chocolate mousse and topped with white and milk chocolate shavings served with either cream or ice cream. Heaven itself.

You can wash it all down with drinks from the bar, where you can buy bottles of beer for £2.75, or a bucket of five for £12.50.

Prices at Scruffys are very reasonable: around £10 for main courses, and evenings from Sunday to Tuesday you can enjoy two courses for just £10.
