Nestled in the picturesque village of Newgate Street is the family-run Italian restaurant The Gables. It is a light and bright place to dine, but remains intimate and friendly; the staff offer a very warm welcome and outstanding service. The extensive menu has been cultivated by the restaurant's chef of ten years, Giovanni Canna, and is packed with enticing Italian creations.

To start we chose the king prawns sautéed in garlic, butter and parsley, and the asparagus with hollandaise sauce - both were tasty and succulent. To follow, the veal chop with a white wine and rosemary sauce was cooked delicately and melted in the mouth - brimming with rich and full flavours. The lamb cutlets with tomato and mushrooms were divine and well seasoned. A selection of home-grown organic vegetables was included, as were the wonderfully crunchy, yet fluffy, sauté potatoes. The delicious range of desserts includes homemade tiramisu and creme brûlée, and there is also an excellent selection of wines, each with varying essences to complement your meal.

The Gables is a wonderful restaurant with a vibrant and friendly atmosphere. The staff are attentive and it is obvious that making you feel welcome comes naturally. The mouth-watering food is excellently presented in an elegant manner and portions are the perfect size - what more could you ask for?
