In the delightful village of Gattonside, just a ten-minute stroll over the chain bridge from Melrose, you will stumble upon the Mediterranean charms of Chapters Bistro. Celebrating its 12th anniversary this year under the management of husband-and-wife team Kevin and Nicki Winsland, Chapters really is a family affair.

Kevin is usually found in the kitchen, creating all manner of exciting dishes and delighting the many regular customers with his creativity and expertise. Waiting to welcome you is Nicki, who presides over front of house and will show you to your candlelit table and give you plenty of time to peruse the à la carte menu, while Latino music gently flows in the background.

The specials blackboard is simply brimming with seafood dishes and chargrilled steaks. The à la carte menu too offers a feast for all the senses. Begin with Cajun-chicken Caesar salad powdered with Parmesan shavings, and you’ll be licking your lips in anticipation of your mains. Moving on, and the half a roast duckling glazed with honey and moated with a rhubarb and ginger sauce had me in raptures.

A mid-week special three-course menu is offered at the fantastic price of £19.95 and includes a choice of desserts, among which you might find the likes of sticky toffee pudding with lashings of whipped cream – sheer indulgence from start to finish.
