Manchester has many noodle parlours, but for real Japanese cuisine, I suggest you experience the deliciousness of Teppanyaki Japanese Restaurant. In the heart of Chinatown, Teppanyaki has been delighting customers for over 20 years with the showmanship of preparing your chosen dish right in front of you.
We began with a trio of starters that were as tasty as they were appealing to the eye: California maki (prawn, avocado and cucumber rice rolls), yakitori (skewered pan-fried chicken and leeks), and lamb sashimi, which is delicate slices of succulent meat, served rare. All three dishes were note-perfect and served with hot sake.
Then William, our chef for the evening, took centre stage and gave an incredibly theatrical performance as he created our main courses from scratch – teriyaki-style beef (so tender it melted in the mouth) and thick, juicy tuna steaks. Watching him prepare the accompanying egg-fried rice and stir-fried vegetables was to see a true artist at work; needless to say, the results were amazing. For those dining on a budget, Teppanyaki offers a special three-course lunch for just £9.95 (Wednesday to Friday only), but for the full experience get down to George Street in the evening and give your tastebuds an exotic workout.
