Number one for dining in Hale, Players Restaurant and Bar boasts an interesting band of regulars. Everyone in the sports world, including the entire Manchester United team, has dined here – and it doesn’t take long to understand why it’s so popular.

Restaurateur Colin Burne, who, with 30 years of industry experience behind him, is a celebrity in his own right, greeted us. He quickly pointed out that a no-fuss attitude, which transcends to the menu itself by offering good simple food, is what keeps people coming back. In addition, with such a level of experience, you know his promise of ‘comfortable dining, with quality and quantity’ will be delivered.

Past an intriguing display of sports memorabilia, the stylish interior of rich burgundy and luxurious leathers beckons.

As one who relishes choice, the impeccably adventurous wine list delighted me, as did everything else I sampled from the innovative menu. Each dish seems to top its predecessor. From the menu, which caters for both the adventurous diner and traditional gourmand alike, my companion chose chicken liver parfait with fruit compote with warm toast, following it closely with a juicy 8oz fillet steak Diane served with sautéed potatoes.

Wild mushroom and asparagus risotto scented with truffle oil begged to be sampled – a task I gleefully undertook. Aromatic pork kebabs served with tangy kumquats and shallots, set upon stir-fried egg noodles was my next pleasure, succeeded by bewitching croque en bouche; profiteroles oozing cream, provocatively drizzled in caramelised sugar.

Players becomes lively at weekends and there is a definite buzz about the place – an atmosphere that exudes all the character of its charming host. As an alternative to Players, you could always opt for the fine international cuisine offered in the relaxed environment of the elegant Mendelssohn’s restaurant.
