Spice up a dreary afternoon of Northern drizzle with a trip to one of Manchester’s few Caribbean restaurants. The exciting menu at Dr Livvy’s is in the process of being revamped, but still has all the classics you would expect: ackee and salt fish, jerk chicken and rice and peas.

The nachos and potato skin starters were tasty and not too filling; a good thing too, as describing the main courses portions as plentiful is definitely an understatement.

The jerk chicken dumpling, a whole chicken breast cooked in a spicy jerk gravy encased in a dumpling, served with plantain and rice and peas, was a melt-in-the-mouth fantastic.

The chicken salad came packed with fresh ingredients and topped with sliced, tender moist chicken breast and spicy seasoning. I would suggest you try to leave room for deliciouslooking desserts, displayed in the chiller-cabinet, tempting you as soon as you walk through the door.

Monday to Friday noon until 2pm and 5pm to 7pm, and Saturday and Sunday noon-3pm, Dr Livvy’s offers a Taste of the Caribbean Buffet, encouraging people to try this fascinating type of cuisine. This is also the place to get your early morning filter coffee, served from 8am to10am.

Call on Dr Livvy for a snack, a full meal or a late night coffee and cake after the theatre or cinema. Whatever time of day you call, you can be assured of tasty food and a very warm welcome.
