Picture yourself wandering down the world-famous Champs Elysées, pausing at the window of a warm and inviting bistro designed in decorative golds and rich reds. The aromas emerging from the kitchen draw you inside and, before you know it, you have spent an afternoon wining and dining Parisian style. It is this kind of relaxing eating and drinking experience that Café Rouge has so expertly recreated on our shores.
Breakfast at Café Rouge is a treat not to be missed; whether you have a penchant for some fine French pastries - including the perfect pain au chocolat - or fancy the indulgence of salmon Benedict coupled with a glass of Bucks Fizz, you'll find a tempting array of early morning delicacies with excellent coffees and fresh juices to complement. The core menu is available at both lunchtime and in the evening, featuring everything from the lightest of snacks to hearty rustic French staples. If you're on the move, plats rapides are the ideal choice, with a range of dishes from £8.95 including salmon fishcakes and quiche Lorraine. The changing prix fixe set lunch menu is also available from noon until 5pm every day and offers a great value lunch for £6.50 for one course or £8.50 for two. If opting for a three-course French feast, start with escargot or soupe à l'oignon, then continue with boeuf bourguignon (a speciality of the house) or relish steak frites. Of course there are sandwiches, salads, sides, nibbles and moules aplenty, and the dessert menu should most definitely be explored. With pavé de chocolat, tarte tatin or the coupe gourmande (a sundae for real chocoholics), the dessert list blends tradition with some modern touches. Complete your Continental experience with a plate of French cheeses, including Camembert and a crusty baguette - 'délicieux'.
To complement all of this fine food, or simply to enjoy unaccompanied, the staggering range of quality wine listed at Café Rouge is an oenophile's dream, with plenty available by the glass and bottle. When it comes to the finer things in life, it seems the French have always had the right idea - Café Rouge is bringing a little of 'la belle vie française' to your corner of the UK.
