Booking is recommended at this deservedly busy restaurant set in the heart of Castlefield. In a picturesque courtyard you’ll find the striking Albert’s Shed, and with a recently recruited head chef, its success is certain to continue. Diners can either opt for the contemporary interior of cool, clean design with floor-to-ceiling window views over the courtyard and canal, or to eat alfresco. Don’t worry, there are heaters for when the weather isn’t balmy and either option is great for a spot of European-style people watching.

The menu is Italian-influenced with a fantastic selection of pasta, risotto and pizzas with a twist, featuring combinations such as pesto beef pizza or smoked haddock risotto topped with a soft-boiled egg. Exciting and artistic starters include salmon and lemongrass fishcakes and the highly recommended asparagus spears served with a soft poached egg and Parmesan crust. My not-to-be-missed 8oz fillet peppercorn steak was the best I have tasted and there are extensive fish options too, all served with a choice of two thoughtful sides, like spinach, roasted vegetables, homemade chips or herb and lemon couscous. The Shed’s previous occupant insisted that the restaurant be named after him – Albert’s name will forevermore be associated with outstanding dining. Visit www.albertsshed.com for more details.
